Care, support and personal assistants

If you provide practical and emotional support to a person of any age who have a learning disability or a mental health condition you are a carer.

A carer may be a friend or a relative but most usually a parent.  Carers are adults of a young person under 18 years of age.  Leicester offers a range of support networks to support you as a carer.

Leicestershire Centre for Integrated Living

Leicestershire Centre for Integrated Living (LCiL) is led by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. Through a variety of projects and services; LCiL creates opportunities to support equality and achieve their inclusion.

Leicester Parent Carer Forum

Leicester’s Parent Carer Forum is a group that meets monthly to improve care and support in the city by raising awareness, shaping service provision and by making input to local authority strategic meetings.

The Forum invites guest speakers to talk about wide ranging relevant, topical matters.  

SENDIASS

Special Educational Needs and Disability Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) was previously known as the Parent Partnership Service.  SENDIASS provide information, advice and support if you are a:

  • Parent or carer of a child or young person from birth to 25 in Leicester City who is concerned about their educational progress or the support they are receiving
  • Child or young person from birth to 25 in Leicester City with SEND and who is concerned about the educational progress you are making or the support you are receiving

Support for adults who are carers

The Carers Centre provides advocacy, support, benefits advice, group support, information sessions, carers' breaks and training services for people looking after a relative, friend or neighbour.  For more agencies providing care and support go to MyChoice.

Support for children who are carers

Barnardos Care Free Project provides young carers with practical and emotional support services. Referral is made by an adult, a GP, school, professional or the person who is being cared for.  

Personal Assistants

A Personal Assistant’s register is held by the Council to enable families to match their needs to personal assistants locally.  The Disabled Children’s Service provides a variety of free training to develop the skills of parents and carers and their assistants.
