Early Years training offer

Many of our courses continue to be delivered online. We are hoping to offer some face to face courses but this will be confirmed nearer the time.

 We are able to adapt many of our courses to to whole settings – please talk to your Area SENCO if you wish to arrange this.

Autumn 2021

  • Setting-based SENCO
    Wednesdays - 27 October; 3, 10, 17, 24 November; 1 December (6 sessions)
    1pm to 4pm

    This six-week course is for early years practitioners who are taking on the role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) within their setting. Practitioners will become familiar with the requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice: 0 - 25 as well as the guidance and processes within Leicester City. This will include developing an understanding of roles and responsibilities relating to special educational needs and disability (SEND), learning how to identify and assess children who may have special educational needs and developing an understanding of what provision needs to put in place. Participants will learn how to write and review plans for children with SEND and how to involve and refer to other agencies.

  • Fun Time
    Tuesday 2 November
    9.30am to 12.30pm

    This enhanced level course develops practitioners’ knowledge of promoting children’s social communication skills through the Fun Time approach and enables them to plan and deliver effective Fun Time sessions within their own setting. The course involves participating in a variety of Fun Time activities and songs.  Fun Time is part of a continuum of provision to develop children’s social communication skills, along with Play Interaction and Circle Time.

  • Speech and Language Support for 0-3s (ELKLAN)
    Thursdays - 4, 11, 18 November; 2, 9 December; 6, 13, 20 January; 3, 10 February (24th February - portfolio support)
    9.30am to 12.30pm

    This is an enhanced level accredited course that develops practitioners’ knowledge of communication and language development and provides practical ideas to promote children’s communication and language skills. There is a particular focus on supporting children who have speech, language and communication skills (SLCN).

  • Get Going with Visuals
    Monday 1 November
    1pm to 4pm

    This course provides an insight into the use of visual cues to support children’s communication, language and learning. It discusses strategies and provides examples of a range of resources, including visual timetables, choice boards, cue cards and labelling the environment.
  • Talk Matters!  Get Going with Communication
    Tuesdays - 9, 16, 23 and 30 November
    9.30am to 12.30pm

    This universal level course develops practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of how children’s communication and language skills develop and explores why language is an essential life skill. It provides practical ideas to enable practitioners to promote the language skills of all children and to support children who have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

  • Early Years SENCO award (NASEN) 
    Wednesdays unless stated - 13, Thursday 28 October; 3, 17, 24 November, 8, 15 December; 5, 19 January; 23 February
    Celebration event and certificates – Wednesday 16 March

    This course is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of experienced Early Years SENCOs in performing their role more effectively. Participants must hold a Level 3 qualification. They will gain NCFE Cache L3 award for Special Educational Needs Coordinators in Early Years Setting.

  •  Good Autism Practice - Autism Education Trust (AET)
    Monday 15, 22 November
    9.30am to 3.30pm

    This course is for all practitioners who work regularly with children with autism. It looks in more detail at the ‘four areas of difference’ and provides practical ideas and strategies of how to support children who have a diagnosis of autism or who have communication and social interaction needs and where a diagnosis is being considered.
  • Children with Hearing Loss - Supporting Children in Pre-school Settings and the Foundation Stage
    Wednesday 17 November
    8.45am to 12.30pm 

    This course gives an overview of different types of hearing loss and its effect on language development. It will develop practitioners’ skills in managing audiological equipment and provides advice on inclusion, deaf awareness strategies and supporting a child with a hearing loss.

  • An Introduction to Down Syndrome
    Thursday 25 November
    9.30am to 3.30pm

    This course raises awareness of the needs of children with Down syndrome, including their strengths and difficulties, and provides strategies to promote effective learning.

  • Play Interaction for Children with Communication and Interaction Needs
    Monday 29 November
    9am to 12.30pm

    Play Interaction is part of a continuum of provision to develop children’s social communication skills, along with Fun Time and Circle Time. This enhanced level course develops practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of Play Interaction, including information on strategies to support children who have communication and interaction needs and advice on planning and running Play Interaction sessions.
  • Leadership Good Autism Practice – Autism Education Trust (AET)
    Wednesday 8 December
    9.30am to 3.30pm

    This training is for staff in positions of leadership and who train and support others, e.g. SENCO, setting manager. It uses the AET early years autism standards and provides practical support and resources to support whole setting improvement in meeting the needs of children with autism.
