You said about City Psychology service:
Schools shared they were receiving insufficient support from the psychology service to support and manage children and families with SEND and mental health needs.
We listened and we:
- re-evaluated service delivery
- introduced new ways of working, to include prevention and early intervention work
- strengthened our working relationships with our key partners and stakeholders
- improved access to the psychology service.
You also said:
In response to the schools “Get it right” survey, an issue was raised around insufficient EP hours for prevention and early intervention work. The time dedicated to statutory requests for EP advice was deducted from the allocated time for schools, therefore less prevention work was able to take place, which would impact on families, children and young people being supported and making progress. Families contacted the EP service directly or raised this as an issue with headteachers and SENCo’s.
We listened and we:
Re-evaluated how we deliver our core local authority service to the Leicester city community and schools to ensure that resources are being used in an efficient manner to meet highest area of need. Statutory time for EHCP needs assessment has been separated to ensure prevention and early intervention work can be completed.
Allocated a number of days to schools per year for prevention and early intervention work, which can include casework with child and family consultations, training and staff drop ins, parent workshops and school-based panels to support school staff to attain the knowledge and support strategies they need to meet the child’s needs in school. This supports using SEND funding effectively and children/young people getting suitable provision and support at the earliest point of identification to prevent escalation of their difficulties.
Improved joint planning meetings (SEND Services, Health, School senior staff) to look at individual cases and situations and decide who is best placed to work with the child, family and professionals and allocate the order of work based on high priorities. This has improved family satisfaction and confidence in the SEND service offer.
We have found that the Statutory EP advice is supported by the prevention and early intervention work and hence the changes to the service delivery has strengthened the offer to schools and Leicester city community.
Schools are reporting they feel more supported by the EP service.
