Key information about the CFVI
The Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI) has been developed to support children and young people with vision impairment access an appropriate and inclusive education.
The framework identifies outcomes within 11 areas:
• Facilitating an inclusive world
• Sensory Development
• Communication
• Literacy
• Habilitation
• Orientation and Mobility
• Habilitation: Independent Living Skills
• Accessing Information
• Technology
• Health: Social, Emotional, Mental and Physical Wellbeing
• Social, Sports and Leisure
• Preparing for adulthood
Why the CFVI is important
The CFVI:
- Is inclusive – it provides an overview of the key areas of learning that will enable the child or young person with vision impairment to access their education and extra-curricular activities in the most inclusive way, and with as much independence as possible.
- Promotes best practice - it is used by specialist staff from the Vision Support Team to help plan and teach these key skills to the child or young person.
- Shares understanding - it provides a shared language to aid discussions and understanding amongst all involved in the child or young person’s education; how and when these skills should be taught by suitably qualified specialists and how they can be reinforced by non-specialists.
How is the Leicester City Vision Impairment Team implementing the CFVI?
The Qualified Teachers for Vision Impairment (QTVIs), Specialist Teaching Assistants and Habilitation Specialists offer advice, support and the teaching of specialist skills which relate to the 11 areas of the CFVI.
Our work aims to prepare all children and young people with a vision impairment for independence into adulthood. We feed back to parents/carers and settings through our reports which reflect the areas of the CFVI.
We support settings and schools by ensuring that staff have the confidence to work with children and young people to develop their specialist skills in their daily lives.
